Klingons with ridges in the new movie.
Coming soon.net is reporting that the Klingons in the new movie will have ridges on their heads. You can see a Klingon in the background on the monitor behind Director JJ. Abrams.
Now some may wondering why this is news!? Well it seems that Trek fandom is in a big debate over whether or not the Klingons in the new movie should have smooth heads or ridges.
The original series, which the movie is based on, had the smooth headed dark complexioned klingons. Then came the 1979 feature film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture which featured Kilngons with ridges on their heads for the first time. The original show never had the budget to depict them that way but the feature film did have the cash and we have had bumpy headed Klingons ever since.
There was never an on screen explanation given for the new look of the Klingons (in my opinion an explanation was never needed) but in 2005 the two part episode of Star Trek: Enterprise “Affliction” and “Divergence” explained the cause of the ridges to a failed medical experiment the Klingon High Council had done in an attempt to increase the strength and intelligence of the Klingon race. The expriment back fired resulting in mutated Klingons.
Despite Star Trek09 being basically a reboot placing the events in a different universe many fans wanted the Klingons in this movie to be smooth headed like they were in the original series.
I was never happy about the explanation because I don’t need every continuity change explained to me. I just accepted the fact that the higher budget allowed them to be depicted as they would have if the original series had the money.
Isn’t it rather strange what we nerds argue over?
