USS Enterpise: Changes made to Kelvin Universe Enterprise.

I recently viewed Star Trek Beyond (review coming shortly) and I noticed that the USS Enterprise was altered for this movie. An in-Universe explanation would be that the ship was re-fit. However, in the movie no explanation was given for the re-fit redesign.

I am posting this little rant to say I really do not care for the updated version used for this recent movie. I have run across many fans that do not like this Enterprise to begin with. Many call this ship the JJ-Prise in rather pejorative terms. Although, I do like all incarnations of the infamous ship, the Enterprise-D being my list favorite, the 2009 incarnation is one of my most favorites. I just love the aesthetic flow this ship has and the larger Nacelles do look powerful. Concept artist Ryan Church’s initial designs were modeled and refined by set designer Joseph Hiura. This design was then given to ILM for further refinement and developed into photo-realistic models by Alex Jaeger’s team. One change I particularly like (most fans do not) is the blue color, instead of red, to the Bussard Collectors at the front of the Nacelles.

Above is the redesign. The Nacelles have been reduced in size although they do maintain the initial shape. The struts the Nacelles are resting upon are thinner and angled back. The neck of the ship is thinner and does not tapper back toward the shuttle bay as it does in the original. The flow now seems off to me and the nacelles are too far back and too small losing the look of power the original had. If they were going for a similar look to the Prime Universe Re-fit/Enterprise-A design then they failed. 15940368_10210293621529823_8831323782946991076_n

Here is another pic to examine the two designs side-by-side.

*SPOILERS* This redesigned Enterprise was destroyed in the movie. Despite the redesign I was sad to see her go far too soon. At the end of the movie we were introduced to the new USS Enterprise NCC-1701 A for the Kelvin Universe. I didn’t see it enough to have much of a judgment although I do like what I saw. Here is a pic of it but keep in mind it may not be 100% accurate and may be subject to change.

What’s in the Hopper?

More Robocop news. It is being reported that RoboCopis being pushed back until 2014. The movie is in production right now and its original release date was August 9, 2013. Elysium, a science fiction film starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga and Diego Luna will take that release date instead. No news was given to why it was pushed back. Sometimes things like this are a sign of trouble with the film…but not always. Speaking of Robocop, the London Daily Mail has released pictures of Robocop on his motorcycle. I do have to say I like the look. Not much in the news today folks.

I recently did some art work so today I will share my picture of a monster/dragon I drew.

What will Godzilla Look like: Part II?

This was a picture that was drawn buy someone who supposedly saw the trailer. I like this design, I could live with it…but it really doesn’t say Godzilla to me.

Here is a clip from Director Gareth Edwards who says the the design of Godzilla isn’t finalized and that it will continue to develop.

Stay Tuned to my blog for Godzilla news as it breaks!

Godzilla!!!

I also am a budding artist, an apprentice in practice, is what I call myself (yeah that term may be redundant). So from time to time I will share some of my art work. This is a picture of Godzilla that I did last year. He has no pupils because he is modeled after the version of Godzilla that appeared in the 2001 Toho movie: Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. That movie is one of my all time favorite Godzilla movies and I am sure I will review that move soon.
